Pioneering Grassroots Transformation Since 1997
Established on September 21, 1997 (२०५४ असोज ५) in Katahari Village, Morang District, Jeevan Bikas Samaj (JBS) was founded by a passionate cohort of local social activists and youth leaders driven by a singular purpose: to break the intergenerational cycle of rural poverty in Eastern Nepal.
At its inception, rural agricultural laborers, landless families, and marginalized indigenous communities (including Tharu, Musahar, and Dalit households) had virtually no access to formal institutional banking, quality healthcare, or education. Trapped under exorbitant interest rates from traditional moneylenders, poor families struggled for basic survival. JBS began as a grassroots self-help initiative, organizing small community savings groups, providing seed capital, and building collective self-reliance.
Over the past 25+ years, JBS has expanded from a modest village initiative into one of Nepal's most recognized national non-governmental organizations. Grounded in transparency, democratic member ownership, and non-partisan secular principles, JBS has touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of underprivileged citizens across Nepal.
